Journey of a Mental health expert Mrs Kavyal Sedani

As a counsellor and a mental health expert,  Kavyal often joked that she wasn't always a psychotherapist but only a psycho. Till it got too much for me to handle !!!

She  truly feel grateful for the whacky emotional and mental wiring that she had as a child . She think it helps her understand people better and empathize with them.

Kavyal had a very average childhood..something every typical teenager would relate to. Average in school. Had a learning disability called discalculia which was undiagnosed till she was 32 !!!! So suffered with bad marks and the fear of maths. Always believing that  she  was not good enough. To top it all she  was blessed with a surname called 'hathi' which was quickly translated into world's like "moti...fatso..hippo"by the whole school ..Being a well fed gujarati with a surname like that doesn't help in keeping your self esteem alive !  So body image issues followed and then rolled in the tonnes of rejections from every guy she liked !

Growing up believing that she was a  super average and no boy wanted her, she decided to marry this wonderful man at the age of 20, who Fortunately saw some good thingd in her ! 18 years have flown and she is still married to him with 2 wonderful kids ( her expression- she smiled looking amazed )

But marriage was not the piece of cake keys  thought it would be. Immediately after marriage , for 4 years she slipped into an undiagnosed depression which took a toll on life and relationships !

She remember going through phases of binge drinking to just escape my life . When she wasn't drinking, she was sleeping 18 hours a day ! No motivation, no goals. No passion,no purpose..nothing to look forward to..

It was at this time that she reached out to get help. And this help changed her life ....

Soon enough she decided to become this help to other people who were suffering silently like me, even though outwardly they may not have a reason to suffer....but there are many like that !

She dedicated her life to mental health and it can be said that she is been married to this profession for 12 years now ! And she feels proud of this.  The most satisfying job that made her  happiest!

Mental health is not an issue now... It has always been an issue but we haven't ever paid attention to it. We have seen our parents and grandparents suffer and strangely enough believed that everyone suffers and life is like that.

Anxieties.. depression..are spoken as casually as  words like headaches and stomach aches.

As quoted by Kavya while talking to SheTimes representative she said " I needed to do what I do to bring attention back to how anxiety or depression can change the course of your whole life. How low self esteem can make u take drastically different decisions in life and get u to choose a compromised life and settle for less than you deserve.
Faulty belief systems like "I am not good enough, I don't deserve it, I'm a failure, I'm not worth it', have broken more dreams and crushed a million lives so quietly that we haven't even noticed it.
This needs to change and for me this is my purpose. This is what I have dedicated my life to and I want to reach at least a million lives and get them to see their own worth ! "
